I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed by
Mark Juddery, a Canberra-based journalist and freelance writer, who's just had his feature story, '
Aussie Heroes Left to History', published in Brisbane's Courier Mail newspaper on Saturday 17 November 2007. It was written to commemorate (in part, at least) the 60th anniversary of the first Australian issue of
Superman All Color Comic, which was published by KG Murray Publishing back in 1947. Juddery uses the Man of Steel's debut 'down under' as the springboard for investigating the brief, but glorious, reign of Australian comic book heroes from the 1940s and 50s, including The Crimson Comet, Captain Justice, The Lone Avenger and Captain Atom, to name a few. There's some nice quotes from 40s industry veterans, such as Arthur Mather and Monty Wedd. To anyone who's more than passingly familiar with the subject, there won't be any revelations here. But for anyone who's ever wanted a quick 'Aussie Superheroes 101' introduction to the genre, this is certainly recommended reading. And the 2-page feature is well-furnished with some great Aussie comic book covers spanning the last 60s years, some of which were taken from items featured in my exhibition,
Heroes and Villains: Australian Comics and their Creators, which was held at the State Library of Victoria in 2006-07.
