Summary: All is well on planet Earth. The Z Force happily goes about their lives, and Goku and Vegeta are training on the planet of Beerus, the God of Destruction. Peace cannot last for our heroes. The forces of Frieza have come to Earth to use the Dragon Balls and bring their leader back to life.
Review
Plot: The story is, like most DBZ stories, simple. Frieza's forces come to Earth and resurrect Freiza. Then, the defenders of Earth, led by Gohan, Piccolo, Krillen, Tien, and Master Roshi (yes... Master Roshi), must defend the planet until Goku and Vegeta can arrive. It's standard DBZ fare. One fun inclusion is Jaco, from the Akira Toriyama manga; Jaco The Galactic Patrolman. He arrives on Earth to warn Bulma of Frieza's impending arrival, and gets coerced into helping in the defense of the planet. As with most Dragon Ball battles, all characters are time-wasters until Goku can arrive. Unfortunately, the events are extremely predictable. The movie gives away its ending in the first ten minutes through dialogue, and indeed, the mentioned new ability is used to save the day.
Characters: Most of the DBZ characters fans know and love are in the movie, and per usual, the ones who aren't are given excuses for their lack of inclusion; usually that they lack the power level to survive. One exclusion that greatly bothered me however was Android 18. When 18 informs Krillen that she is going with them to help, because she is still stronger than he is, he tells her to stay at home and take care of their child. She agrees, with no fight, and as he leaves, comments that "He's so cool." Essentially, Krillen tells the woman that her place is with the child while the man fights, even though the movie admits that 18 is stronger than Krillen. As even more a slap in the face, Master Roshi and Tien, two fighters who were long ago surpassed in terms of strength, do fight. Goten, Trunks, and Buu are nowhere to be seen, and while Bulma explains that she doesn't want her the children fighting, the characters never give a reason why Buu is missing despite being explicitly mentioned earlier in the movie. There is no further characterization in the movie, as all the characters are exactly what the viewer would expect based on the TV series.
Presentation: Resurrection F is a good looking movie. The animation is sharp and fast paced, and the sound is also top notch. There is some repeated animation, as can be expected from anything Dragon Ball or Shonen Jump. Nothing stands out though. The blue-haired saiyan warriors don't look as bad as previews made it seem, and the reason for Frieza's gold form is amusing. The intro theme will be familiar to fans of DBZ.
Entertainment Value: Very mixed. While the action is enjoyable, it also makes no sense. There is no real reason given as to Frieza's extreme power boost, and Gohan's extreme power decrease is due to 'lack of training'. There is no good explanation as to why it takes the Z-Fighters so long to defeat Frieza's minions. It has been clearly established in the series that a single strong fighter can eliminate hundreds of weaker ones. Despite that, it takes Gohan, Piccolo, and Krillen a very long time to defeat Frieza's lackey's. The movie even throw's that fact in the viewers face when, in one scene, Gohan, who had been struggling, suddenly turns around and defeats a few dozen of them in seconds. It was frustrating.
Rating: 5.5/10 - A movie that plays on fandom by bringing back one of the most loved villains of the Dragon Ball universe, and then completely wastes the potential the scenario creates.
Dragon Ball Z Resurrection F - Feature Length Film (94 minutes)
Note: I watched Resurrection F via Comcast HD on demand, and I am happy I did that instead of purchasing it. The blatant sexism in the movie bothered me, and is practiced on Bulma as well, for if Earth is destroyed, Beerus promises her he would save her so she can cook for him. Dragon Ball has always been somewhat sexist, but it was so blatant in this movie that it was annoying.
