599. Walking With Dinosaurs, the 3D Movie: movie review

WALKING WITH DINOSAURS, THE 3D MOVIE
Cert U
87 mins
BBFC advice: Contains mild threat and violence

After watching The Harry Hill Movie, Walking With Dinosaurs came as blessed relief.
I feared this wasn't going to be my bag but I was rather charmed by the story of Patchi (voice of Justin Long), a pachyrhinosaurus who is the runt of the litter but learns to fight the good fight.
I know that Barry Cook and Neil Nightingale's film has taken a bit of a battering from the critics but I thought they were missing the point.
This is a splendidly accessible (non-crusty) way for children to learn about the land of dinosaurs (every time a new species is announced, it is accompanied by a label which describes its main features).
In addition, there is a plot which brings together strands about family love, bullying, revenge and growing up.
We are introduced to Patchi soon after he is born and struggles to compete with his siblings for food brought back to the nest by his parents.
He tries to go his own way but more aggressive dinosaurs are always a threat and he is regularly put down by his alpha male brother (Skyler Stone).
Meanwhile, he makes his own friends in the form of a chirrupy bird (John Leguizamo) and a potential sweetheart (Tiya Sircar).
I have seen several reviews stating that this version of Walking With Dinosaurs is not as good as the BBC series.
Having not seen the latter I can't compare but I have to say that this is decent family entertainment and a perfectly acceptable way of spending 87 minutes.
However, my eyes did bulge when I read that its budget had been £80 million. I would question whether it is good enough to reap back that sort of investment.
Laughs: a couple of chuckles
Jumps: none
Vomit: yes - the baby dinosaurs eat what their parents regurgitate
Nudity: none of the dinosaurs are clothed
Overall rating: 6/10
