British actress/singer, Jane Birkin, 68, has in a statement by animal rights organisation, PETA asked Hermes to change the name of its Hermes Birkin bag, one of its most expensive and highly coveted fashion item which she was an inspiration for because she does not want to be associated with it anymore after learning that crocodiles are allegedly harmed during the bags' production.
Hermes Birkin bags which cost hundreds of thousands of dollars were created in 1984 by former Chief Executive Officer, Jean- Louis Dumas in 1984.
Her statement reads,
"Having ben alerted to the cruel practices endured by crocodiles during their slaughter for the production of Hermes bags carrying my name, I have asked Hermes group to rename the Birkin until better practices responding to international norms can be implemented for the production of this bag".
Hermes has told Daily Mail it respects and shares Jane's emotions but that the farm on PETA's expose does not belong to the brand. Hermes imposes on its partners the highest standards in the ethical treatment of crocodiles.
Hermes said,
"For more than ten years we have organised monthly visits to our suppliers. We control their practices and conformity with slaughter standards established by veterinary experts on fish and wild life and with the rules established under the aegis of U.N.O by Washington Convention of 1973 which defines the protection of endangered species".
